The coelacanth has modified cosmoid scales that lack cosmine and are thinner than true cosmoid scales. Ganoid scales. Ganoid

Ctenoid scales are scales with comb-like edge found in higher order teleost fishes, such as perch and sunfish. Cteni are the tiny teeth on the posterior margin of the scale. Similar to cycloid scales, they are overlapping which allows for greater flexibility in movement than other types of scales such as ganoid scales. The finescale dace has what are called ctenoid scales, called this because of the cteni that run along the posterior area of the fish. Such scales can be seen in modern advanced teleostean fish such as perch (Perciformes), sunfish, etc. The shape, texture and decoration are exactly like cycloid scales.

Ctenoid scales are composed of two main regions, a surface layer having a hard shell resulting from crystallized calcium salts, and a deeper layer that is built with collagen-type fibrils. Three generalized types of ctenoid scales have been categorized.

ADVERTISEMENTS: Annuli are considered as year-marks in the age determination of fish in the case of the following facts. Ctenoid scales have a variously developed spiny posterior margin (the word 'ctenoid' comes from the Greek cteno, meaning comb, and refers to the comb-like ctenii on the margin of the scale). It is made up of inner layer of collagen fibres and an outer organic layer impregnated with calcium salts. Cycloid scales are characteristic of the more primitive teleosts with soft-rayed fins, including fishes such as trout and salmon (Salmonidae) (Figures 4 and 5), minnows (Cyprinidae) (Figure 7), and herring (Clupeidae), whereas ctenoid scales are found on many spiny-rayed fishes (Acanthopterygii) such as perch (Percidae), most mullets (Mugilidae), and scorpionfishes (Scorpaenidae).

Cycloid scales consist of two layers of non-cellular bony tissue: homogeneous tegumentary tissue and fibrous basal tissue. The tegumentary layer proliferates along the periphery in concentric stripes known as sclerites. The periodicity of sclerite formation, shown by annual rings, makes it possible to determine the age and growth rate of the fish.

Ctenoid scales

As a fish with cycloid or ctenoid scales grows, its scales also grow. The increase in size of the scales causes the development of growth rings known as circuli.
